He founded the ashram in 1926.

In Indic lore, this symbol is generally understoord to consist of two interlocking triangles, representing Shiva (the upwards triangle) and Shakti ( the downwards triangle) in a harmonious embrace. In the teachings of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, its meaning can further be deepened by seeing it as the human aspirations towards the Divine and the response from the Divine in a reaction on this. When these are perfectly balanced, in the junction of both arises a perfect manifestation of man's position in the universe. The water in this central field represents creation and the Lotus flower is an Avatar of the Supreme.

The circular symbol on the left is the symbol for 'The Mother' (Mirra Alfasa); she was the spiritual collaborator of Sri Aurobindo and entrusted by him to translate his visions into a concrete, materialized, practical form. She dedicated herself to running and expanding the ashram on a daily basis and founded the township of Auroville, an experimental international township where the teachings from the ashram are actually lived by the residing community.

Her symbol represents the Divine Feminine:
* the central circle symbolizes Divine Consciousness.
* the four petals around it represent the four aspects or four personalities of the Divine Mother: Maheshwari, Mahalakshmi, Mahakali and Mahasaraswati.
* the twelve petals in the outer circle represent the twelve attributes or twelve strengths of the Divine Mother: sincerity, humility, gratitude, perseverance, aspiration, receptivity, progress, courage, goodness, generosity, equality and peace.

These pendants are from vintage origin and have been taken from a pilgrimage to Auroville in the 1990's. They are made of brass and can be used for example as wallhangers (they both have a small hole in the middle where a small screw can go through) or be worn as personal amulets by hanging them on a cord or necklace.

Sizes; The Mother's symbol is approximately 8 centimeters in diameter and weighs 43 grams.
