A gau (also spelled Ghau or Gao) is a type of traditional Tibetan Buddhist small box, locket or frame that is used as a portable reliquary, often so small that it can be worn as personal jewelry.

A gau usually holds the image of a personal beloved deity, in the form of a picture or small figurine. To this image all kinds of other sacred objects and blessed items can be added, such as fragments of prayer scarves and mantra scrolls, charms and relics.

When worn as personal jewelry, the gau is often worn very close to the heart, where it serves as a daily source of protection and blessing.

This gau holds the image of Kubera (also named Dzambala), the Tibetan god of wealth, printed on a piece of thick, durable nylon fabric.

According to legend, Kubera himself wasn’t born in incredible wealth, but instead in unimaginable poverty. He needed to gain a lot of experience, wisdom and skill along his way to becoming the keeper of all earthly treasures that he is today. Therefore, Kubera is said to especially appreciate those who adequately assess their capabilities, and try to earn not only money, but also a broad outlook and experience.

Kubera rewards those who work hard for an overall rich and full life on all 3 main roads of life; health, career and personal life. He helps to gain, keep and increase not only material and financial wealth, but also a wealth of experience, knowledge and wisdom. He helps to keep a clear overview of where to focus on, where to wisely spend your money, time and energy on and where all this would be wasted and you’d better just stop and walk away.

This gau has been made of alpaca metal, decorated with images of the Tibetan Buddhist Eight Auspicious Symbols and some (faux) gemstone cabochons. The backside is stamped with the kalachakra symbol and the inside with the symbol of the double dorje.

Sizes; approximately 63 millimeters high (measured without the eyelet) en 53 millimeters wide. Weight is 46 grams.
