In the Hindu pantheon, Durga is seen as one of the principal aspects of Mahadevi, the supreme Mother-Goddess. Devi impersonates the Divine Feminine principle and Durga is one of her aspects; a fierce, wrathful manifestation of Shakti.

It is said that Durga came into this world completely full grown, ready to go to war with the demon Mahishasura, a demon so powerful that both Vishnu and Shiva didn't dare to fight with it and which could only be defeated by a woman. During their epic battle, Mahish shapeshifted into a buffalo, a lion, an elephant and a heavily armed warrior, but Durga defeated him nevertheless and decapitated him.

Durga is worshipped as an invincible warrior goddess and very powerful protector. She is fearless and knows how to remain calm and keep her sense of humor even in the most intense battle situations. She is often depicted riding the tigress (or lioness) Dawon and holding in her (4, 8, 10 or even 20) arms a wide range of weapons that were given to her by the gods.

The pendants here in our shop are decorated on both sides; one side shows Durga, riding on Dawon, holding (amongst other weapons) a sword and trident while having some of her other hands in mudra positions. The other side shows the symbol for the (mantra)word "Aum". This symbol and its sound, when spoken as an individual seed mantra or as part of a bigger mantra is said to be the all encompassing cosmic vibration of the universe. It represents all times, all awareness of times and the overtaking of time itself. When recited, it activates and energizes all the chakra's.

The pendants are made of brass and weigh approximately 7 grams each. Size (measured without the eyelet) is 27 millimeters high and 18 millimeters wide. There are two pendants available. As can be seen on the pictures, one of them has an extra eyelet attached to it. This one is also a bit more detailed in its decoration. The decoration on the other one is a bit more abstract. These pendants come from Nepal and are from vintage origin.
