Nicely detailed statue depicting the bodhisattva Vajrapani in his Krodha (wrathful) manifestation.
Vajrapani is one of the earliest-appearing bodhisattva's in the teachings of Mahayana, Theravada and Vajrayana Buddhism. He is one of the three 'Great Bodhisattva's', the three bodhisattva's that are the nearest companions of Gautama Buddha. In this trinity, Vajrapani respresents the Power of Buddha, Avalokiteshvara represents the Compassion and Manjushri the Wisdom.
Being not only the Buddha's nearest companions, but also the greatest protectors ('dharmapala') of his teachings, they all have both peaceful and wrathful manifestations.
The name "Vajrapani" can be translated as "holder of the thunderbolt", the thunderbolt being the vajra he holds in his right hand. The index finger from this right hand is extended into 'tarjani' position, a typical wrathful gesture. His left hand is in 'karana' position, to ward off evil.
Some of the other typical elements from the iconography of Vajrapani that can be seen in this statue are: a loin cloth made of tiger skin, a necklace of freshly severed heads around the waist, a 5-headed skull-crown and the company of some garuda's (in this case on his left hand and in his crown).
This statue has been made of brass which has been treated with special methods to attain a nice dark red color and antique look. It is approximately 19 centimeters high and 15 centimeters wide. The pedestal has a bottom diameter of 13 centimeters wide and 6,5 centimeters deep. Weight is 835 grams
This statue is from vintage origin and might therefore show some signs of its age, but overall it is in good condition.
