Prepared paws from dutch hares turned into pendants with a Tibetan silver setting. The pendants are hung on a piece of black waxcord, which closes with a simple knot so it can easily be adjusted to your personal size.
Hare paws can be seen as a similar relative to the more commonly known rabbit feet lucky charms, which origin goes back into the nebulous depths of time, though most stories consent on one thing: the rabbit feet should come from quite uncanny circumstances to be particularly effective. Stories range from rabbits being killed specifically for this purpose at a gravesite, or even the specific grave of a certain criminal, at midnight, on rainy Friday’s or Friday the 13th, or at the time of dark moon.
Some historians also suggest an association with the medieval good luck charms called “hand of Glory”, where a finger (or whole hand) of a hanged man was cut off and preserved as a very strong lucky charm. It’s easy to see the cross-over idea in this; the more wicked the origin of the hand (or rabbit foot), the more powerful the charm.
But then why especially a rabbit? The reason for this also is not completely clear, but dates back probably to Celtic times, when the rabbit was considered to be equally respected and feared; because of its life in holes underground it was thought to be able to communicate with the spirits of the Underworld.
A rabbit foot as a lucky charm is believed to attract good fortune, a good harvest and support with fertility issues (think about the rabbit’s well known reproductive qualities and you’ll know why).
Tho all of the above can also be ascribed to the use of hare paws, there's one thing that makes hare paws stand out as an even more magical amulet: a hare in many cultures is strongly associated with witchcraft, one of the most well-known ‘familiars’ of the witch and one she often was said to shapeshift into herself.
