Small dutch wooden shoe ("klomp"), decorated in a traditional dutch folk painting style known as "Hindelooper", referring to the name of the small Frysian village where this style of painting originates.

The Hindelooper painting style can be found on all kinds of furniture, home decoration and utensils. Its history can be traced back to the 17th century. With the big overseas trading companies eastern luxury goods such as Chinese porcelain and Scandinavian wooden objects painted in the Norse "Rosemaling" style came into the Netherlands. Both styles were a source of inspiration for the Hindelooper motives.

This small wooden shoe has been made by (former) atelier Halbertsma in Hindeloopen. This atelier specialized in painting decorative objects and small furniture in the traditional style. As can be seen on the picture of the backside, this wooden shoe has been decorated in a period when the local Hindelooper telephone numbers still existed of only 3 digits, making it possible to determine the age of this item to the early to mid 20th century. Considering this age, it is still in great condition. This wooden shoe probably has been a very treasured item for its previous owner.

A beautiful item to place on your altar to connect with your dutch (or more specifically Frysian) roots and ancestors.
