Very nice, recently made pendant with a Bagua symbol, meticulously carved in a piece of very dark green jade. The green color is so dark it almost looks like a not-transparant black, only when held up to the light it shows its beautiful semi-transparent character with some bottle-green spots.
The central depiction of this pendant shows a motive that became widespread during the Chinese Song Dynasty (960-1279): a Bagua. This motive is nowadays still one of the most popular symbols in Feng Shui, believed to protect against all kinds of evil and to attract harmony and balance in life.
The Bagua symbol consists of the 8 trigrams ('Ba Gua') of Par Ha Ge, arranged in a circular pattern. The trigram symbols come from very ancient origin; they derive from symbols found on ancient Chinese divination bones dating back as long as 11th century BCE. Each trigram is a divinatory grapheme and represents different dynamics, energies, cardinal points, animals, seasons etc. A related version of bone oracle is still used today by Turkic and Mongolian people, and also in the lineage of Spirit of Wolf Shamanism; 'Khaziki'.
Also the trigrams (doubled to form 64 hexagrams), are at the core of the I Ching, the Book of Changes.
In a Bagua symbol, the 8 trigrams have been arranged in a circular pattern, often around a Jin-Yang symbol in the center. The bagua symbol represents a visual demonstration of the principles of heavenly order, a natural balance (also illustrated by the Jin-Yang symbol in the center) and a right flow of energy.
Size of this pendant is approximately 48 millimeters in diameter and 5 millimeters thick. It weighs 28 grams. Recently made and in great condition.
