Chinese numismatic charms, or' Yansheng coins' refer to a wide range of amulets and talismans manufactured in a coin-like style, which originated and became widespread during the Western Han Dynasty (2th century BCE). Inititally this started with the use of coins from former ruling dynasties and empires (coins that were of no longer use as currency) as talismans and amulets. Over time this developed into casting coins especially for this purpose (with symbols for good luck, wellwishes and prosperity).
Nowadays coin-like, numismatic charms are well-known as a commodity in itself. Think for example about the Feng Shui 'lucky coins'. The numismatic charms are used for a wide range of purposes, such as wearing them as personal amulets or using them for divination purposes. They can be found in many different types, styles and shapes.
This relatively large numismatic charm is a specific kind known as Zengde Tongbao, which can roughly be translated as "currency of correct virtue" or "coinage of true virtue". Their name refers to the reign of the Zengde emperor in the Chinese Ming Dynasty. During his reign no offical cash coins were minted, but there were on the other hand a large amount of numismatic charms casted, with all kinds of auspicious depictions and inscriptions.
Zengde Tongbao coins commonly feature the depiction of a dragon on one side. The dragon in Chinese mythology and iconography has a very rich, layered and profound symbolism. And among many other meanings, it has been the symbol of the Chinese emperor for many dynasties and Chinese people might sometimes refer to themselves as 'descendants of the dragon' as a sign of ethnic identity.
Larger sized charms such as this one are a common gift for family and friends, given on all kinds of special occasions. They can be hung on a cord near the main entrance of the house or in the living room and are believed to attract prosperity, luck and wellbeing, while warding off all kinds of evil. Zengde Tongbao also have a specific usage for pregnant women; protecting both them and their unborn child and assisting in a good child-birth.
