Bells are used for spiritual and ritual purposes all over the world, especially on the Eurasian continent. Also when visiting a traditional shaman, they are not to be missed. They are everywhere. On the costume, on the drum, on the altar, on attributes and spirit dolls.
Altar bells such as this one can be used during rituals, ceremonies and healing sessions, especially at the beginning and/or end of the session. They are used for multiple reasons. For example; they clearly mark the beginning and end of the session, making it a period set apart from the rest of the day, their sounds and vibrations cleanse space and energyfields and they call in the helpfull spirits and drive out the heavy ones.
This somewhat smaller sized altar bell comes has been made in India or Nepal, where they are especially used for Hinduist (daily) pooja rituals, that can take place both as community ceremonies in temples as in smaller family or individual settings at the home altar. They are intimate moments of personal worship and connection to the gods and spirits. The bell is rang to start and end the ritual, or even continuously during the ritual. Traditionally they are held in the left hand, while the right hand places the offerings on the altar. This beautiful old bell shows a depiction of Garuda at the handle; the part man - part eagle Hindu God whose image has spread all over Asian territories and (spiritual/religious) traditions.
This bronze altar bell is a very old one already and clearly shows the (charming) signs of its age. The exact age is very hard to tell, but looking at its appearance, beautiful patina and wear and tear, there is no doubt that it is of very respectable age. But its high pitch sound is still really good and it will make a great ritual attribute once again.
Sizes; approximately 13,5 centimeters high and 5,5 centimeters diameter. Weight; 142 grams.
