Prepared paws from domestic rabbits turned into colorful pendants. The paws all come from animals that died of natural causes and have of course been prepared with great care and a lot of ritual. The pieces of fabric, cord and braid are all leftover pieces from other craftworks by Chyltys Kam (such as from amulets or rattles). We like the idea of using every last bit or piece of material, so these leftovers are carefully collected and used in smaller craftworks such as these.
The origin of the use of rabbit feet as lucky charms goes back into the nebulous depths of time, though most stories consent on one thing: the rabbit feet should come from quite uncanny circumstances to be particularly effective. Stories range from rabbits being killed specifically for this purpose at a gravesite, or even the specific grave of a certain criminal, at midnight, on rainy Friday’s or Friday the 13th, or at the time of dark moon.
Some historians also suggest an association with the medieval good luck charms called “hand of Glory”, where a finger (or whole hand) of a hanged man was cut off and preserved as a very strong lucky charm. It’s easy to see the cross-over idea in this; the more wicked the origin of the hand (or rabbit foot), the more powerful the charm.
But then why especially a rabbit? The reason for this also is not completely clear, but dates back probably to Celtic times, when the rabbit was considered to be equally respected and feared; because of its life in holes underground it was thought to be able to communicate with the spirits of the Underworld.
A rabbit foot as a lucky charm is often worn as a keychain, but can also be simply put in your pocket. It is believed to attract good fortune, a good harvest and support with fertility issues (think about the rabbit’s well known reproductive qualities and you’ll know why).
These rabbit paw pendants have a small metal split ring attached to them, making them ready to hang on a piece of cord as a personal amulet, or to wear as a keychain, or to attach to your ritual clothing or attributes.
The paws very in size between approximately 11-15 centimeters length (measured without the eyelet). The split rings have a diameter or 14 millimeters.
