Shiva Lingam stones have been worshipped by Hinduist for ages, with the earliest known examples dating back as early as the 2nd century BC in India. Nowadays they have also found their ways into western practices, where they are especially well-loved for their ascribed spiritual-energetic properties.
The Shiva Lingam stones are combination stones (aggregates) containing mostly cryptocrystalline quartz (chalcedony) and inclusions of iron oxide, agate, jasper, and other minerals. They often have a base color in shades of light brown, beige and grey, with patterns of stripes, patches and dots in warm red and dark brown colors.
Most of them come from one of the 7 sacred sites (Sapta Gangas) along the banks of the Narmada river in India, where they are gathered once a year (by people from families with ancestral rights to do so) during a specific Hindu ceremony. Tho they might have a somewhat oval shaped model by nature, they are mostly tumbled and polished into this balanced and harmonious shape.
The typical egg-shape can be explained in different ways, but most often it is associated with the Cosmic Egg (Brahmanda), which symbolizes the idea that all of existence, the whole universe, originated from one single starting point that held both the divine feminine and divine masculine forces within.
When following this idea a bit further in regards to the overall appearance of a Shiva Lingam stone, it can be said that the (somewhat phallic) shape represents the masculine principle, and the colorings and patterns represents the feminine. This also translates into the kind of spiritual-energetic healing properties that are attributed to the Shiva Lingam stones; they are said to work exactly on this balance between the male and the female energetics. They are used to balance and harmonize the yin and yang qualities within us, in this way making both energies more healthy and strong. This balancing work on the masculine-feminine axis is supported on both the physical, mental and emotional level, thus supporting in improving overall lifeforce, energylevel, inner fire, sexual energy and creative energy.
