Amongst a lot of (especially) nomadic tribes on the Eurasian continent, the spear can be considered one of the most popular historic weapons. In Chinese territory this can for example be dated from the ancient Shang dynasty to the more recent Qinq dynasty. They were used for fighting, guarding and hunting and were known in different forms; such as the long, light throwing spears and the more sturdy, short spears for fighting.
Being a very personal weapon, the metal spearheads were often inscribed with the name of the owner or his family. Important clan leaders sometimes even used precious stones and metals such as gold to emphasize their status.
In a lot of those tribes it was (and still is) good use to paint the shaft of the spear in red or another sacred color and attach certain objects of power to the spears, for example figurines of deities and totem animals, ribbons or bunches of horsehair. It is believed that in this way extra power is transferred to the spear, to increase its power and accuracy. In fighting situations, this was also done to intimidate the enemy and determine the outcome of the battle.
Being such an important weapon amongst many cultures and traditions, the spear also gained importance as a more symbolic item. In many tribes, next to the spears for practical usage, also their more ritual equivalents can be found; spears that are only used in a symbolic way during ritual and ceremony.
And from there eventually, also just the symbol of the spear (such as in miniature forms in amulets or jewelry or in depictions) is used in many different ways for its association with certain dynamics. To name only a few; the spear symbolizes fierce activity, valor, masculinity, purposefullness, ambition and even the axis of the world. Also a lot of deities from the Buddhist and Hinduistic pantheons are often depicted holding spears.
