Very nice lusterware cups and saucers made by former Dutch earthenware factory Société Céramique Maestricht. From 1863 to 1958 this factory was based in Maastricht, a city in the southernmost point of the Netherlands and produced decorative ceramics and dinnerware in a variety of styles.
These cups and saucers here in our shop are decorated in their style TIMOR; an oriental inspired design. The TIMOR decor was used on a full range of high-end table-/dinnerware produced between 1880 and 1930 for the Dutch East Indies market, the Dutch colony that later became Indonesia.
The TIMOR decor was applied using a method called 'transfer print', supplemented with handpainted colors. First a monochrome print on paper (from an engraved copper or steel plate) was transferred by hand by pressing it onto the ceramic piece. With this method the dark blue outlines and solid colours (underglaze) in the decorations were applied.
After that, the other colours (red-brown, yellow-brown, green, yellow, pink and light blue, both underglaze and overglaze) were handpainted on it.
Using the transfer print method for the first part of the decoration work, it allowed for the production of beautiful, detailed and decorative items, which would be very expensive or impossible to produce by handpainting only.
The yellow-brown and green colours have a so called 'luster glaze'; a metallic shine which gives a very nice and luxurious effect.
These cups and saucers can be dated somewhere in the early 1900's (between 1900 and 1930). Considering this age, they are still in very good condition, though of course minor flaws and imperfections from previous usage may be seen here and there.
Sizes; the cups are approximately 4 centimeters high and have a diameter (measured at the top) of 6,5 centimeters. The saucers have a diameter of 11 centimeters.
This item consists of a set of 3; 3 cups and 3 saucers.
Very beautiful cups to drink your (ritual) tea from, especially of course when you have ancestral roots in the Netherlands. Or also perfect to use on your ancestral altar, to pour drinks and serve sweets to your (dutch) ancestors.
