The skull as a symbol is known in a lot of traditions. In Christianity for example it has its ‘memento mori’ meaning, reminding us that our physical life will end one day, after which our soul will be held accountable for the life we lived.
In eastern traditions like Buddhism and Hinduism the skull symbolism includes more however. The skull represents for example the important Buddhist concept of emptiness, which is considered to be a quality of the universe. Meaning that all we experience has no inherent nature by itself, all events are basically neutral, it is our human minds that attach meaning to them.
In eastern philosophies the skull is not only a symbol of death, but also of infinite life, and therewith also a symbol of the ancestors and the clan. In Tibetan culture the skull is also a symbol of protection from the Gods.
In Tibet, skull pendants like this are traditionally used in rosaries or mala’s. But they can also be worn as a separate amulet or be sewn on the shamanic costume.
These skull pendants are made in Tibet and come to us via our friends at Shaman Bazar. They are made of bronze and attached to a Himalayan yak leather cord. Size; approximately 34x20 mm.
