Very nice vintage ceramic oil lamp made in a traditional Frysian style locally known as "kerfsnede" (notch cut / chip carving) earthenware .
This specific type of earthenware is made by first modelling the base in a mold or on a pottery turntable, after which the motives are handcarved into the (still soft) clay. After a week long period of air drying, the earthenware is baked in the oven and then glazed with (traditionally) three main colors. After this the earthenware is ovenbaked one more time to get the typical shiny ceramic appearance.
Not only the style, but also the type of this oil lamp is a typical dutch one: this model is locally called a "snotneus" (runny / drippy nose) oil lamp, referring to the fact that small drops of oil might leak from the spout when the wick sucks in the oil. In the design of this oil lamp, a solution for this inconvenience has been found by integrating a 'saucer' at the bottom, to collect possible oil drips. The saucer even has a shallow spout, to pour this oil back into a storage container. A great example of the typical economical dutch mindset.
Placing this oil lamp on your altar is a great way to connect with your dutch heritage, roots and ancestors.
This oil lamp is glazed in vibrant green, blue and brown colors. It is approximately 12 centimeters high and 10 centimeters in diameter (measured the 'saucer' at the bottom).
Please note; this oil lamp is from vintage origin and has a small damage at the 'eyelet' at the top. This has been carefully restored, but can still be seen if you look at it very closely. Of course the price for this oil lamp has been reduced accordingly.
