Very nice Nepalese rudraksha mala.
The mala has been quite recently strung again but using rudraksha beads that are much older than the mala itself. As can be seen on the pictures they have become very dark over time, almost black. It is believed that this has increased their power. Most rudraksha beads turn naturally darker over time and the longer they have ripened, the darker they have become. In this ripening process, over time they have gained a lot of natural energy. So for beads with this very dark, almost black color, it can certainly be said that they have quite some age to them already. Another indication for their age is that the beads have smoothened from a long period of being handled already. Can you imagine how many mantra's and prayers they have heard already? All and all, older beads like this are considered to be highly energized and highly valuable.
Rudraksha beads are categorized by the number of faces/facets that can be distinguished on the surface. These are called 'mukhi'. In this mala, 5 mukhi beads have been used. The 5 faced rudraksha bead is the most commonly used type, it represents the five forms of Lord Shiva himself. The 5 mukhi rudraksha helps in awakening one's higher self and from there the personal connection to the divine. Also, 5 mukhi rudraksha beads have a special affinity for the 5th chakra, the Visshudha or throat chakra.
In this recently strung mala, the old rudraksha beads have been combined with more recently made tubular wooden beads in the style of Tibetan 'dzi' beads and hand engraved small yak bone beads.
The rudraksha beads have a diameter of approximately 18 millimeters. The tubular wooden beads are each approximately 3 centimeters long. The beads have been strung on yellow macrame cord with a total length of approximately 95 centimeters. Being from vintage origin, it of course shows some signs of its age and previous usage.
