Very nice vintage red copper statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, a very important and highly revered spiritual leader in 5ht and 4th century BCE in Nepal and India (known by life as prince Siddharta Gautama), whose teachings would become the foundation of Buddhism.
Buddha sits in his famous pose on a lotus throne; legs crossed in vajra position (lotus position) with his right arm extended across the knee in bhumisparsha mudra (earth connection gesture). His left hand holds a begging-bowl, which symbolizes his teachings on humility and non-attachment on the one hand and, a necessary assumption with that, the reliance on the goodwill and generosity of others on the other hand.
The dot on his forehead is known as 'urna'; it is said that from this spot a brilliant white light radiated, illuminating the whole universe. His elongated earlobes point to his former royal status (the earlobes stretched by wearing heavy jewelry) and the robe worn over his left shoulder would have been in the traditional monk's saffron-yellow color.
This statue is from vintage origin an shows some minor signs of its age and previous usage, but overall it is in good condition. It has most likely been made in India or Tibet. It is 17 centimeters high and the pedestal has a width of 13 centimeters and a depth of 8 centimeters. Weight is 1102 grams.
