Bronze pendant with the depiction of the head from a fierce, growling wolf, combined with the shape of one of its impressive claws.
For us personally, the spirit of the Wolf is of course of the utmost importance, being the main spirit of the classical shamanic lineage of Spirit of Wolf we work in. But of course this tradition is far from being the only one where the Wolf has this important presence.
In Central Asia the first rock paintings of a wolf can already be dated back as far as the Neolithic Era.
In the mythology of the Khakass and Tuvan people, the first living creature created by Tengri was the White Wolf; a symbol of chaos, female intuition and power, from which 99 sons were born, who became the beginning of 99 clans. Some of the local nicknames for the wolf still refer to this very first Wolf; for example the Turkic "Tengeriin Nokhoi" (heavenly dog) or the Mongolian "burkhanay-nokhoi" (dog of God).
For Turkic people such as Kazakh, Tuvans and Altai the wolf symbolizes the strength of the bonds between ancestors and descendants and the importance of ancestral traditions.
On the territory of the Great Steppe, the wolf's head was depicted on the flags of the united tribes of nomads and on weapons and hunting objects. For the nomads, the Wolf was the main totem; his voice and habits were copied, their battle cry sounded like a wolf's howl. And in many nomadic tribes it was believed their shamans could turn themselves into wolves.
Also on other parts of the globe the image and symbolism of the Wolf can be found. Think for example about the wolf that nurtured Romulus and Remus, the mythological founders of the city of Rome. Or the wolves Geri and Freki that accompany the Norse god Odin.
